Koinobori Workshop
Upstream Together at Tacoma Public Library
On Saturday, the Upstream Together Koinobori Workshop brought families, neighbors, and partners together for an afternoon of creativity and sustainability at Tacoma Public Library’s Main Branch.
Led by the City of Tacoma Environmental Services Artist in Residence, the workshop invited participants to create Koinobori—traditional Japanese carp streamers made from upcycled materials. Community members selected their fish parts, learned about sewing and reuse, and helped bring a collaborative dragon sculpture to life.
Special thanks to Tacoma Public Library for hosting such a calm and welcoming space, and to the Maker Labs for sharing their highly collectible 3D printed koi and medallions. Thanks also to Write253 for their creative print activation, Remakery Tacoma for ongoing support, and Tacoma Tool Library for providing sewing machines.
Join us again at the South Sound Sustainability Expo on Saturday, April 26 at Tollefson Plaza, where the community’s Koinobori and dragons will be on display alongside even more ways to celebrate sustainability in Tacoma.
