Teruko Nimura – Artist, Educator, and Community Advocate
I’m Teruko Nimura, a multidisciplinary artist dedicated to exploring the intersections of art, sustainability, and community storytelling.
Welcome! I’m Teruko Nimura, a multidisciplinary artist dedicated to exploring the intersections of art, sustainability, and community storytelling. Through my work, I seek to engage people in meaningful dialogue about environmental responsibility, cultural memory, and collective action.
My Approach
Art has the power to connect, challenge, and inspire. Whether through large-scale public installations, intimate workshops, or interactive projects, I use reclaimed materials and creative reuse to highlight sustainability issues. My projects encourage communities to see waste not as an endpoint but as an opportunity for transformation.
Tacoma’s Artist in Residence
As the City of Tacoma’s first Artist in Residence with the Solid Waste Division, I’ve had the opportunity to embed art into sustainability initiatives. My work—spanning public art installations, workshops, and educational programs—has focused on increasing awareness around waste reduction, recycling, and environmental stewardship. Collaborating with organizations like the Tacoma Public Library, Tacoma Tree Foundation, the Science and Math Institute (SAMI), and large-scale events such as the Ground to Sound Film Festival, I’ve helped bring sustainability education to diverse audiences in creative and accessible ways.
Collaborations & Community Impact
I believe art is strongest when it’s shared. My work is deeply rooted in collaboration, whether partnering with students, environmental organizations, or city departments. Projects like Upstream Together, Entangled, and the Community Weaving Project have invited community participation and helped bridge the gap between public art and environmental action.
Let’s Connect!
